Mummies Shamble Into Conan’s World

Posted on February 12, 2021

These miniatures have been on my painting shelf for over a year and I got tired (or ashamed) of staring at them. Painting them was fun, although painting a large number of similar miniatures is always a little tedious, especially if they wear uniforms, as in these mummies case. I viewed the mummies as undead manifestation of age-old palace guards, which gave me the opportunity to paint three colors of sashes.

I chose to paint the mummy’s skin dark and used GW contrast Basilicanum Grey. Pick the patches of skin carefully on the miniature as they are somewhat hard to spot among the bandages.
Bandages were painted with Skeleton Horde as a good base, with the intent to highlight areas of bandages at a later stage.
Clothes were assigned two different colors for diversity, with contrast Stylish Purple (a little too dark in retrospect) and Warp Lightning.
For metallic parts, I used an old Boltgun Metal (testament of the vastly superior older pGW paint pots) and Balthasar Gold for the jewelry and inner part of the weapons.
Finishing the color blocking, I chose a red color for weapon handles and a craft paint brown for the bases (so as not to clash too much with the boards).
Highlighting the clothes with a drybrush/small brush (for smaller areas too close to previously detailed areas) highlight using Genestealer Purple and Warboss Green
Highlighting bandages with GW Ushabti Bones
Blades have to appear worn, rusted and age-old so I resorted to my favorite rust tandem (GW Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust) highlighted with Boltgun Metal for surfaces that were ‘scrapped’ clean.
The mummies are ready to infest the Hyborian world… (building courtesy of my local Petco aquarium decorations).
