How to Paint the Gouged Eye Orcs Team

Posted on January 10, 2021

Well, having painted a human team and in accordance with GW habit of pairing them with orcs in any Blood Bowl starter box, I decided to paint the 2016 starter box Gouged Eye Orcs. Then I can finally take the 2020 rules for a spin! Lets go on putting paint on these minis…

First put together the team on their base. This is rather simple as the miniature have a blockish style that fits their subject well. Of course, remove any sprue connection mark and fill the (unlikely) gaps with putty.
The miniatures were zenital primed,. which means I used a black primer applied from below with an airbrush, followed by a gray primer sprayed at 45 degrees and a final white primer sprayed from directly on top of the miniature (hence the ‘zenital’ moniker).
Next I chose contrast paint ‘Blood ANgel Red’ to apply to the omnipresent armor plates, followed by Dark Reaper for the shirts and Rakarth Flesh for the pants.
I then applied Contrast Gore Grunta Fur to the loin cloth, Rhinox Hide to the armor straps and Steel Drab Legion to the socks.
Belts received Abaddon Black and any bare metal surface was thinly coated with Leadbelcher.
Make certain top pick which armor plates you wish to leave bare rather than painted red.
Let us now start the sharing, which I advise you let to dry for a good 1/’2 hour before applying other contiguous colors.
As we did for the Reikland Reavers, we apply Seraphim Sepia to the pants, so as to capture the nice sculpted folds.
Apply a wash a Nuln Oil; to the shirt.
and a wash of Agrax Earthshade to the shoes, straps and wrist braces.
If you have some Nuln Oil Gloss, and I suggest you get some as it works magic on metal surfaces while retaining the shine, apply it to any raw metal surface.
That is of course a personal preference, but I love Vallejo Ground Textures. I applied some Rough Pumice over the slot marks and hole of the base. Feel free to cover the whole base with texture if you wish but keep in mind it will be partially covered with grass.
I use brown craft paint to paint the altered base as it is cheaper that hobby paint and has a decent coverage.
Now time to start highlighting: The first highlight I picked is probably the most time consuming as it covers most of the miniature. Moreover, I chose to edge the armor, which is both delicate and quite log. But the effect is worth it. Dry brushing may be an option for some of the plates but many are either too small or too close to other colors to make it worth your time and effort. Layering and edging are your friends.
Paints are highlighted with Rakarth Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh. Skip the second one for speed.
Shirt is highlighted with a single color but I suggest layering for the top of the shirt as it will bear better results.
Now the skin, which is important as it brings the miniature to life.
While the skin highlight dries, you can apply a silver color to highlight raw metal exposed to light. Also apply dots of metallic color to rivets, buckles and cleats. (note: the leadbelcher is WRONG in the photograph).
Back to the face and nails with abase coat of Averland Sunset and a highlight of Screaming Skull.
And finally, highlight the lips and nose to bring variety to the face.
A dot of white on the eyes followed by red for this Orcish look.
Do not forget painting the markers and coins in the same scheme. I mounted the markers on 25mm base as they tend to fall over easily otherwise.
Finally, apply the decals as desired and weather them with the red color. I always suggest using Micro Set to hep with a solid adherence.
Orc team completed and ready to compete for the title 🙂
