I have now completed the color-blocking phase of the Raven and Wild Board clans. This constitute my first painting phase where I define colors and decide upon color schemes by applying paint to all areas of the miniature. The look is quite rough and I am counting on the next phase, shading, to mask some of my mistakes. But this phase is important as it allows for early modification of color schemes and start to provide a 3 dimensional aspect to the miniature, revealing aspects of it that had been missed at first.
Shield detailing
I broke my process by applying detail to the shields wood as an experiment. I used the Vallejo approach detailed in the ‘Wood and Leather’ kit. Boards were applied an initial layer of either Japanese Uniform or Flat Earth to which were applied several washes of respectively Flat Earth (for Japanese Uniform base), Smoke and Woodgrain (for Flat Earth base). This is a simplification of the Vallejo method which uses mixes and progressive darkening. I finished the job by drawing wood grain marks with Dark Sand/Japaneses Uniform and Dark Sand/Wood Grain on lighter and darker strips.
